Adult Literacy Services at CV-TEC are designed to help adults move forward with confidence—whether your goal is earning a high school equivalency credential (GED), building stronger reading and math skills, improving workplace readiness, or exploring training and career pathways. Preparing for the GED
Earning your high school equivalency is more important than ever. Take the first step toward a better future with the General Educational Development (GED).
Deciding to go back and get your high school equivalency takes courage. You may have been out of school for a long time, only a few years, or even less. Preparing for the test does take work and CV-TEC is here to help. We offer a variety of ways to prepare, including classes and home study options.
New York State Education Department has provided CV-TEC with grant funding so we are able to offer preparation for free.
Step 1: Call 561-0430 ext. 3088. You will be registered for an orientation and a TABE assessment. During the orientation, you will learn about our classes and home study programs and make a decision which option is best for you. You can always change your mind later.
The TABE assessment measures the skills you have in reading and math. The teacher uses this assessment to assign you work based on YOUR abilities. This is not a pass/fail.
Step 2: Prepare for the GED test either through classes or home study. The work you complete will be individualized to your abilities. Your teacher will let you know when you are ready for the GED test.
Step 3: Take and pass the GED!
Job Skills Training
CV-TEC receives grant funding through the New York State Education Department and the Office of Temporary Disability Assistance to provide job skills training for adult students with or without a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma.
CV-TEC supports tuition for the following training programs:
- Certified Nursing Assistant
- Welder
- Assembling Industry: Manufacturing and Education (AIME)
- Customer Service
- Computer Basics
- OSHA 10
- Other trainings may be supported as well, depending on the participant’s goals.
Correction Education Program
CV-TEC’s Correction Education Program, located at the Clinton and Essex County Jails, was established in 2019 to serve incarcerated individuals seeking to obtain their GED, earn work readiness credentials, acquire life skills, and prepare for successful reentry into their communities.
Services Provided:
- GED Preparation, Testing, and Diploma Completion
- Job Skills Training (AZTEC Ready2Work, National Work Readiness Credential, Industry Specific OSHA 10 Courses, ServSafe Food Industry)
- Life Skills Programs (WIN Learning Soft Skills, CHANGE Cognitive Behavioral Intervention, PAXEN 100 Hour Pre-Release Preparation, Parenting Education, Domestic Violence Prevention, Conflict Resolution)
- Case Management including development of an individual Community Reentry Plan (Housing, Financial Security, Employment, Job Training, Continuing Education, Transportation, Food Security, Mental Health/Substance Abuse/Medical Treatment Referrals)
Upon release, students are encouraged to transition to our OneWorkSource Campus to continue to receive a wide range of services and follow-up care.
Take the GED Test
GED – High School Equivalency Test (Formerly TASC)
The New York State Education Department has provided CV-TEC with funding so we are able to offer GED Testing to adults without charge.
Eligibility: 17-18 must meet NYSED requirements. 19 and older are eligible.
The GED test covers four subject areas:
- Reasoning through Language Arts
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
Each area is a subtest and they all need to be passed in order to pass GED test.
Passing scores from the TASC may be used toward GED.
We provide test accommodations if you have special needs including extra time or Braille, large print, or audio versions of the GED test.
Class Schedules
CV-TEC receives funding from New York State Education Department. This allows us to operate programs at no cost to student.

Home Study Options
Students unable to attend class may enroll in a home study program. Students receive individualized assignments delivered to their local libraries or to the OneWorkSource Centers every 2 weeks. A teacher is available by phone or one-on-one tutoring Mon – Fri, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
